Let’s Try an Experiment

One of my favorite people I’ve come to know and love in Credit Union Land is Denise Gabel of the Filene Research Institute. She’s one of those people who brings out the best in others and I credit her with pushing me to try things I never would have without her encouragement. I’ve noticed that  Denise has an uncanny way of taking the fear out of most any new situation with just four magic words:

{Let’s try an experiment.}

Those 4 words are usually the prelude to an interesting adventure, but they have a way of making the ground seem closer to the beam. After all, an experiment is seemingly harmless – a risk-free trial. Let’s do this one time and if it doesn’t work, we’ll learn from it and move on. It just has a way of shifting the brain’s view of the perceived risk of why an idea might not work to how to make it work through experimentation.

So, next time you want to try something new and get others to join you in an adventure, call it an experiment and watch as the fear dissipates.
